Gas Safety Checklist: Protecting Your Coastal Kitchen
In coastal Nigeria, a gas leak isn't always caused by a loose valve; it’s often caused by "micro-corrosion"—tiny rust holes in the pipes or burner bases that you can't see. Use this checklist every month to stay safe.
1. The Visual "Flame Test"
A healthy gas flame should always be crisp blue.
The Warning: If your
Bosch Gas Cooker or any other model shows a "floppy" yellow or orange flame, it means the burner is struggling with incomplete combustion. The Coastal Cause: Salt buildup in the burner holes often restricts gas flow. Clean the burner rings immediately with a soft brush.
2. The "Soapy Water" Test (The Gold Standard)
You don’t need expensive equipment to find a leak.
Action: Mix a little dish soap with water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the gas hose, the regulator, and the connection points.
The Sign: If you see bubbles forming and growing, gas is escaping.
Pro Tip: Do this every time you swap your gas cylinder!
3. Check the "Rust Zones"
Because of the salt air in cities like Lagos, specific areas are prone to dangerous "hidden" leaks:
The Regulator: Check for green or white powdery buildup (oxidation) on the brass regulator. If it looks "chalky," it's time to replace it.
The Hose: Standard rubber hoses become brittle and crack in high heat and humidity. Upgrade to a reinforced, high-pressure hose from
Kara’s Accessories Section .Under the Cooker: Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the cooker. If you see "flaking" metal, the structural integrity of the gas lines inside may be compromised.
4. Follow Your Nose (and Ears)
The Smell: Gas operators add a "rotten egg" smell (mercaptan) to gas. If you smell this even when the cooker is off, do not turn on any light switches. A single spark from a light switch can ignite leaked gas.
The Sound: Listen for a faint "hissing" or whistling near the cylinder or the back of the cooker.
What to Do if You Suspect a Leak
Stop: Do not use your phone, a lighter, or any electrical switch.
Ventilate: Open all windows and doors immediately to let the salty, humid air carry the gas out.
Shut Off: Turn the valve on the gas cylinder to the "OFF" position.
Exit: Get everyone out of the kitchen.
Replace: If the leak is due to a rusted part, do not attempt a "patch." In coastal areas, once a part starts rusting, the rest will follow. Visit
