The Coastal Maintenance Guide:
Keeping Your Bosch Hood Powerful
In a typical Nigerian kitchen, we do a lot of "heavy" cooking—think frying dodo, searing protein for stews, and boiling large pots of rice. This creates a high volume of airborne grease. If you live in a coastal area, this grease can mix with salt air to form a sticky, corrosive paste that destroys cheap appliances.
Here is the maintenance schedule to keep your Bosch hood at peak performance.
1. The Metal Grease Filters (Monthly)
The
The Routine: Clean these at least once a month (twice if you fry daily).
The Dishwasher Hack: These filters are dishwasher safe. Simply pop them into your dishwasher on the hottest cycle (60°C+) to melt away trapped oils.
The Manual Method: If you don't have a dishwasher, soak them in hot water with a powerful liquid degreaser (like Morning Fresh) for 15 minutes. Scrub gently with a soft brush—never use steel wool, as it will scratch the silver finish.
2. The Carbon Filters (Every 4–6 Months)
Note: This only applies if your hood is in Recirculation Mode (not vented through the wall).
- The Warning: Carbon filters cannot be washed. They absorb odors like a sponge; once they are "full," your kitchen will start smelling like yesterday’s fish.
Replacement: In the Nigerian heat, we recommend swapping these every 4 months. Genuine replacement filters are available at
Kara.com.ng .
3. Cleaning the Interior "Housing"
While your filters are out for cleaning, take 2 minutes to wipe the inside of the hood.
Why? Small amounts of grease slip through the mesh. If left to sit, this grease can drip back onto your
Bosch Gas Hob or, worse, clog the motor. What to use: A simple microfiber cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.
4. Exterior Care (The Salt-Air Shield)
If you live in Lekki, Victoria Island, or Ajah, the silver metallic finish is your best friend, but salt air is persistent.
Wipe Down: Once a week, wipe the telescopic drawer with a damp cloth to remove salt deposits.
Polish: Use a tiny drop of food-grade mineral oil on a dry cloth to buff the silver metallic surface. This creates a microscopic barrier that prevents salt from "pitting" the metal.
Troubleshooting: When to Call the Pros
The Sound Change: If the hood suddenly starts making a "vibrating" or louder-than-usual noise, a piece of grease might be stuck on the fan blade.
Weak Suction: If you hold a paper towel up to the hood and it doesn't "stick" when the fan is on high, your filters are likely 100% clogged or your external vent is blocked by a bird’s nest or dust buildup.
Summary Checklist
| Part | Action | Frequency |
| Metal Filters | Wash (Dishwasher/Hand) | Monthly |
| Carbon Filters | Replace (Do not wash) | 4–6 Months |
| Interior | Wipe down | Monthly |
| Exterior | Buff with oil | Weekly (Coastal areas) |
Don't wait for a grease fire! If your filters are caked in old oil that won't come off, it's safer to replace them. Shop genuine
