This week in Technology has witnessed the launch of a new product by the 'Android giant' Samsung. This time it is not in the mobile phone device. Rather it is the accessories.
They have launched the Galaxy gear smart watch. The galaxy gear smart watch is an accessory designed to work with other Samsung Galaxy Android devices.
So what exactly is a smart watch; As it is known a watch does the traditional time telling functions. So any watch that provides extra functions in a smart way could be called a smart watch. A smart way connotes offering features related to computing and some analysis of data. These features could be GPS, weather report heartbeat, video recording, mathematical analysis and facebook connect.

As far as I know, Seiko pioneered this with watches many years ago that could offer mathematical calculations, time zone based clocks and others. But Sony also had its own later that could display twitter feeds.
What is the Strategy behind this?
For Samsung, analyst believe it is to drive the sales of the Samsung Galaxy Note. The result of this strategy would only be known after some market tests. According to an analyst, this strategy may fail as it is in a completely new segment - wrist watches segment and not mobile phones.
This opinion is not tested yet and we may wait to see how other players in the mobile and wrist watch segment react to this. Already it has been mentioned that Apple is set to launch its own version of the smart watch and this would definitely compete with the Galaxy gear smart watch. Looking at the wristwatch market segment, one may like to imagine how Casio or Swatch or even Rolex may react to this.
What would it cost?
The watch is expected to cost $299 dollars. This would be available in Nigeria from an online shopping site once it is released to to the market.
